In 1986 Cyndi Black took over as the leader of a 12-piece band called the Bandsmen. Her band leading career began one night when she arrived late to a rehearsal and was surprised to find out that she had been elected the new leader! She accepted her new role and that band evolved into the current 17-piece Cyndi Black Big Band with 5 saxes, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, piano, bass, drums, and vocalist. The band has been playing for events throughout the Central Ohio area for over 30 years now. And yes, Cyndi has some great stories about all those years as a bandleader!
There is nothing like live music! The energy that is created when the audience and musicians connect makes the event come alive. It is fun to watch people’s faces light up and their toes start to tap as they enjoy our music. Playing this style of music is a labor of love for all of the band members. We enjoy playing indoor and outdoor concerts and special events such as weddings, anniversaries and parties. One of our specialties is playing music for ballroom and swing dancers. Watch our website and Facebook page for Central Ohio events that are open to the public.
We play music from the big band swing era of the 1930's and '40's ... the music of the Great American Songbook. We recreate the sounds of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington and many more. Surprisingly, big band music has held up well in modern times. It is still recorded and performed live on a regular basis as well as being used for background music in many commercials and movies. We would love to share this great music with you at your special event, party, or concert in the Central Ohio area.
